Poaching season has begun. With the problems betweenRomeo Doubs and the Green Bay Packers, several teams have already raised their hand to take the problematic receiver, while analysts are already speculating on the player’s possible destinations, including the Kansas City Chiefs.
The problems between Doubs and the Packers came to light late last week when the team announced that the receiver would be absent from the game against the Los Angeles Rams, citing “personal reasons.”
The receiver’s absence caused suspicion among media and fans, but it was not until Monday that details began to emerge about the differences between both parties. Press reports indicate that Doubs is unhappy with playing a secondary role in the Packers’ offense and, in protest, decided to skip the last two practices prior to the game against the Rams.
The team’s management responded immediately by suspending the player. This suspension unleashed an avalanche of speculation, which is already beginning to calculate the chances of Doubs landing with one team or another. Among the first candidates are, of course, the Chiefs.
Could Doubs end up in Kansas City?
Tyler Sullivan, an analyst for CBS Sports, assured several teams are interested in taking the problem off the Packers’ hands. Although there has been no official response from Green Bay, Sullivan considered Kansas City would be a good destination for Doubs.
The reporter admitted that every time there is the possibility of a top receiver coming on the market, the Chiefs are mentioned among the first candidates to sign him. Nevertheless, “The club certainly could use another pass catcher in the aftermath of wideout Rashee Rice suffering a knee injury,” he explained.
Rice’s injury in Week 4 and that of Marquise “Hollywood” Brown before the regular season left significant holes in the Chiefs’ receiver room. With rookie Xavier Worthy, Justin Watson, and JuJu Smith-Schuster as his only targets at the moment, quarterback Patrick Mahomes could use another set of hands.
If not Kansas City, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Washington Commanders all have a need for a good receiver and could trade with the Packers to take the young star, Sullivan said.
Doubs’ situation in Green Bay
Doubs is not in a bad spot in Green Baydespite his discontent. He has been targeted 20 times so far and has caught 12 passes for 169 yards. While his production has certainly dropped with the injury to quarterback Jordan Love, he’s not far behind teammates Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks, who have each been targeted 22 times.
Drafted by Green Bay in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, Doubs has 113 catches, 1,268 yards, and 11 touchdowns in 34 regular-season games.
The University of Nevada product is in the third year of his rookie contract and will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025 season unless the Packers decide he’s not worth the trouble and trade him to the highest bidder.
