It was not a good start to the 2024 college football season for former Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke.
Now a member of the Wisconsin Badgers, Van Dyke’s passing numbers leave much to be desired from a passing performance that should be deemed disappointing during an opening-game win over Western Michigan.
It’s true that Wisconsin does not have much big-play talent at receiver and tight end. Outside of senior receiver Will Pauling, who’s coming off a 2023 campaign with 74 receptions, 837 yards, an 11.3 average, and 6 touchdowns, Wisconsin’s pass attack is far from lethal. Still, Van Dyke and the Badgers went against Western Michigan and not Texas or another prominent college football program.
With less than five minutes remaining in the first half, the score would tied at 7-7. Van Dyke and his Badgers did drive 68 yards to set up a field goal and a 10-7 halftime lead. One would normally believe that’s when Wisconsin would put it’s foot on the gas pedal and go.
Van Dyke did have his moments, as noted below, but there’s still a lack of consistency that UM fans know all too well.
For the second half, Van Dyke’s numbers include the following: 8 of 13, 61.5%, 79 yards, 6.1 yards per attempt, no touchdowns or interceptions. One must give him credit for the final blow that helped Wisconsin win, however.
With the score 21-14 and 7:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, Van Dyke’s passing is a prime reason why the Badgers put the nail in the coffin. That drive includes completions of 13 and 14 yards, setting up a 6-yard Van Dyke touchdown run.
That scoring drive is still a reason for frustration for Canes fans. So much inconsistency during his time in Coral Gables. Van Dyke certainly possesses a lot of talent but was up-and-down with his passing far too often.
