New York Knicks centre Mitchell Robinson will be sidelined at the beginning of the new NBA season after having ankle surgery, according to ESPN.
Robinson appeared in only 31 games last season before initially undergoing surgery in December.
He then re-injured his ankle during the Knicks’ first-round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers.
It also meant he missed New York’s series against the Indiana Pacers.
Now, the Knicks are aiming for Robinson to return to action in December or January, though the exact timeline will depend on how his rehabilitation progresses.
New York’s centre position has been a key question in recent months, particularly after last season’s starter Isaiah Hartenstein, signed an $87 million deal with Oklahoma City Thunder.
Alongside Robinson, the Knicks re-signed Precious Achiuwa during the offseason and also have fourth-year centre Jericho Sims on the roster.
Head coach Tom Thibodeau acknowledged last week in an interview that there may be situations where forward Julius Randle could fill in at centre if needed.
Robinson’s injury news caps off a busy offseason for the Knicks.
The team acquired Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets, marking the first trade between the two New York franchises in 40 years.
Additionally, the Knicks extended head coach Tom Thibodeau and star guard Jalen Brunson, while also securing OG Anunoby to a five-year, $212.5 million contract.
